Networking & Professional Development

Merchandising Inc. believes in creating a professional relationship between the students and experienced guest speakers. Professionals from various aspects of the retail industry attend the bi-monthly meetings. This allows our members to practice their networking skills with highly respectable industry professionals and prepare them for future career opportunities.  Having these guest speakers attend meetings and engaging in outside networking gives our members the advantage to hand out resumes for internships and connect one-on-one with the professionals,  which could further their success in their careers. We also provide our members opportunities to network outside of meetings in dinners and special events with industry executives. Past speakers include: Rhonda Sargent Chambers, Jan Strimple, Jeanette Chivvis, JCPenny Corporate, Fossil Corporate, The Container Store Corporate, Michaels Corporate, Ross Stores Inc., and more.

Job Shadowing

Merchandising Inc. schedules job shadowing appointments all around the DFW area to expose members to numerous facets of the retail world. These appointments range in nature from visual merchandising to interior design to assisting on fashion shows. The job shadowing appointments are meant to demonstrate what members can do with their degree from UNT whether it be in Merchandising, Digital Retailing, Home Furnishings or any other majors.

Fashion Shows

Merchandising Inc. produces two student-run fashion shows each academic year. Traditionally, our fall fashion shows are more casual than our spring shows, and are free for students to attend. For past fall shows, Merchandising Inc. has partnered with the UNT bookstore, Barefoot Denton, and most recently, the MDR Sample Sale. Beginning months in advance, the fashion show producers develop and create an original concept for the annual spring fashion show. Merchandising Inc. incorporates the members in the fashion show’s production by selecting committee members to assist with planning, along with stylists and models. Through their involvement in the show, Merchandising Inc. members are able to gain event planning experience and build their professional portfolios.

NuView is another outlet for our members to get hands on experience in another aspect of the fashion industry. NuView is the Merchandising Inc. online publication and is created by a team of members who take on the role of editorial writers, creative directors, and photographers. Merchandising Inc. believes in giving our members every opportunity to explore different avenues in the industry. Members can also sign up to be stylists or make up artists and work towards getting more experience in the field they are interested in. The shoots are completely done by our members to enhance their portfolios and skills. Past shoots include Alice in Wonderland, Brit Rock, Gothic Halloween, and more.
